The Four Levels of Editing

My fee is based on the amount of work needed. The more work required, the greater the fee. I will work with you to arrive at a fair price for my services. Though editors have different views on what constitutes the components of editing, here is a description of the four levels of editing:

  1. Developmental editing: The document as a whole, including its structure and content.

  2. Line editing: Focuses on clarity and consistency of language, on individual paragraphs and sentences rather than the overall document.

  3. Copyediting: Focuses on correcting remaining spelling, punctuation, and grammar errors; flagging any inconsistencies in content or presentation; making sure a text follows a style guide correctly.

  4. Proofreading: The final step before a document is published. The main focus here is on correct grammar and looking for typos, clarity, and concision.
